It is important to know about how to order food in English. I remembered I made a stupid mistake in France many years ago....My husband and I were about to order some food in a pancake restruntant, and they friendly gave us an English menu. I couldn't understand most of the words, then I saw a familiar word "Lemon juice"and I thought it was lemon juice, I ordered it without doubt and expected to have a glass of lemon juice to enjoy the drink because I had walked all day long. Then it turned out it was a "lemon juice flavor PANCAKE " 😂......My husnabd took a picture of my look at the time the pancake was served and I will never forget the look😂....

I've tried to memorized some import  English words about food before I came to to Vancouver and of course I'm much better than many years ago ( I think👀)
And I also found a very good youtuber who introduced food related English very clear and really useful to me. I share the link as below:

However, after living here for one week, I think there are still some important things we should know and I tried to write them down before I forget...

  • "the portion" (份量):This is  the very confusion I encounter everyday. In USA or Canada, every meal is so "big" than you think. From my bird stomach point of view, every meal can be eaten as 2 meals. So you may ask "how large is the portion?" In case you order too much.

  •  Sides (副餐, 小菜) :Most people know the meaning of "sides", but here I would like to share is that in most of the cases, you may order "sides" only because the portion is just enough for an female Asia people😆, most important of all, it's much cheaper......

  •  Doggy bag   (Take ou box) for leftover (剩菜), wrap up (打包): very high chance you will not finish all you ordered, so a doggy bag (打包袋)to wrap up the leftovers (剩下的食物) is needed.

  •  Have the sauce one the side (淋醬放旁邊):  You order waffle and you want them keep a little chrispy because you want to enjoy them slowly, you can ask them to put the sauce one the side (醬淋旁邊)instead of "topping on it" (直接淋在上面)......

  • Dining time limitation (用餐時間限制) :I think most coffee shops have no dining time limitation, but it would be better if you pay the bill first after you finish the meal, you may stay as long as you want. But if you don't pay the bill, The servers have to serve you every time they pass you by, like " do you need more coffee? "Is the food okay?"  So if you want to stay longer, just pay the bill first and the you can stay as long as you want without disturbance and you also save the server's time.

My Eating experiences in Canda:

  1.  Servers are nicer comparing to USA ( its better not to call them waiter or waitress from respect point of view)
  2.  Foods are salty in Vancouver, no matter Chinese, Cantonese cuisines or normal Canada hamburger.
  3.  Most foods tast different from my expectations and mostly not as good as my expectations. This is probably food preference. So far there was only one food better than my expectation. It was the " Nectarine crostata " ( 蜜桃義大利派)in the "#e food" sandwich shop, no wonder it gets 4.9 stars in review summary👍.
  4.  Foods are expensive here, I think it's around 3 times more expensive than in Taiwan. So a doggy bag is suggested to make one meal split to 2 to lower down the cost 😅.
  5. Japanese restaurant is good choice for a single person: the food portion is predictable and they taste more like you expected 🤓
  6.  No free toilet....you need a key or passward to use the toilet in all the fast food or coffee shop, if you don't eat there or buy anything, you cannot use the toilet. So please don't drink too much if your have a small bladder 😅.
  7. When I back to Taiwan, I order a set of fried noodles, with meat soup and a green bean sweet soup as desert, only cost me 180NT’….I almost cried 😭
